Dealing with a cavity? A dental filling can fix that!cavities

Our Midtown Atlanta, GA, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Travon Holt, just discovered a cavity lurking in a tooth. While this certainly wasn’t the news you had hoped for this is an easy and simple fix. Of course, if you have a cavity the sooner we remove the decay and restore the tooth the better. So, how is a cavity treated?

With a dental filling, of course! Once the decayed enamel has been drilled away by our Midtown Atlanta dentist we will need to restore those areas of the tooth. If we didn’t place a dental filling the tooth would be weak, which can leave it prone to chips and cracks. By placing a filling we can restore the tooth in both strength and resiliency.

Tooth-colored fillings provide even more advantages because they are made to match the color of your tooth so that you’re the only person who knows that you have a filling. Tooth-colored fillings are often made from composite resin but can also be made from porcelain. Since you won’t be able to see the filling you know you can feel confident whenever you smile.

Do you have old metal fillings that you wish you could get rid of? If so, we can also replace these old fillings with tooth-colored fillings, which won’t be obvious to those around you. When using composite resin, the material is highly moldable, which means that we can easily shape and contour it to the surface of your tooth to fill the hole and rebuild it. A thin layer of material is placed, shaped, and then hardened permanently to the tooth before placing the next layer. Layer after layer of resin is applied until the tooth is completely filled.

Tooth-colored fillings are quite resilient and strong, lasting up to 15 years if cared for properly. This means visiting your general dentist twice a year for routine dental cleanings to make sure the filling is still strong and intact. Keeping your teeth clean and protecting your teeth from excessive wear and tear (e.g. wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth at night) can improve the longevity of your fillings.

No matter whether you are dealing with a toothache (a common symptom of a cavity) or you need to just schedule your routine dental cleaning, the dental team here at Midtown Dental Studio in Midtown Atlanta, GA, is here to provide you with the dentistry you require.

Dental implants are a common, powerful, and permanent dental procedure which fall under both the cosmetic and restorative dentistry dental implantsumbrellas. However, while you may have heard of this treatment, you may not understand what exactly it entails or even what dental implants are or what they do. Find out more about the basics of dental implants with Dr. Travon Holt at Midtown Dental Studio in Midtown Atlanta, GA.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a way to replace a missing tooth, several missing teeth in a row, or even an entire arch of teeth. However, unlike traditional bridges or dentures, this tooth replacement option is permanent, non-removable, and implanted right into the jawbone of your mouth, ensuring that it remains in place, functions naturally, and blends subtly in with your smile.

Can I benefit from a dental implant?

Patients missing one or more teeth can benefit from a dental implant. However, not every patient is a good candidate for this procedure. Dental implants require an adequate amount of bone in which to implant, meaning that tooth loss-related bone atrophy should be minimal and too much atrophy could mean that the patient requires a bone graft procedure or cannot receive an implant at all. Additionally, patients should have an excellent at-home oral care routine and be committed to twice-yearly preventative dental examinations and cleanings.

Dental Implants Vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options

Dental implants are permanent and non-removable. A traditional bridge or denture requires removal at night while sleeping and, in most cases, soaking in a cleaning solution while not in use. Implants do not require any removal or soaking and are as easy to care for as your natural teeth. Simply brush twice a day and floss at least once, while seeing your dentist twice a year for examinations and cleanings. A dental implant is the closest you can get to a natural tooth, looking and feeling just like your other teeth and functioning just as well.
