Tooth PainRemoving diseased pulp from inside hurting teeth, root canal therapy saves thousands of smiles annually. Relieving pain and infection, this tried and true restorative procedure never causes infection outside the mouth, says the American Association of Endodontists. Instead, it heals it. Dr. Travon Holt, your award-winning dentist at Midtown Dental Studio in Atlanta, GA, totally agrees. He finds root canal therapy to be an outstanding way to salvage sick teeth and keep smiles complete and healthy.

Do you need a root canal?

You may if you are experiencing the following problems:

  • A large crack or chip
  • Loss of a deep filling or dental crown
  • Discolored tooth enamel
  • Throbbing toothache pain
  • Discharge in the area of the affected tooth
  • Dental sensitivity to heat, cold, and pressures of biting and chewing
  • Swollen jaw and/or gums
  • A pimple on the gums
  • Persistent bad breath

Remarkably, Dr. Holt can remove the source of those symptoms--the inflamed connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves--from the up to four canals interior to each tooth root. This restoration takes two visits to Midtown Dental Studio in Atlanta with a healthy, beautifully restored tooth as the result. That's right--no more pain, infection, or threat of infection.

Dr. Holt will look at your tooth, test its sensitivity, ask you about your symptoms, and take digital X-rays to look at the underlying structure. If he believes the tooth is viable, he'll recommend you have a root canal as soon as possible.

What happens during a root canal

Of course, Dr. Holt will ensure your complete comfort during your procedure. Root canals usually need nothing more than locally-injected medication to numb the tooth. When you're ready, he'll open a tiny access hole into the first root canal and remove the pulp with small files. He'll add antibiotic medication to the canal and then seal it with rubbery gutta-percha to strengthen it and keep bacteria out.

As needed, this process is repeated with the other canals. Then, the dentist covers the tooth with a temporary restoration, and you return home for a week to 10 days of healing.

As the tooth heals, you may notice some gum or jaw soreness, but this will resolve quickly. You'll return to Midtown Dental Studio for your final crowning procedure.

Will it last?

While no one can predict the lifespan of any one tooth, root canal therapy has a wonderful track record of success, lengthening the longevity of treated teeth indefinitely. Best of all, your mouth feels better after root canal therapy. Your symptoms are relieved by a treatment that is just as easy as getting a filling or crown.
